Toys in Russia

According to official statistics, the average annual value of toys sales is Rub 43.6 billion ($1.45 billion), although independent market research agencies and industry self-managed organizations estimate annual sales $2.4-2.9 billion in 2010. Russian market research company inFOLIO Research Group foresees toys market growth at 25% in 2011. Main toy categories: fluffy/plush toys; vehicles, puzzles, building sets, dolls.
The main part of the market is occupied by toys from China and South-West Asia (estimated market share 65%). Local industry was heavily damaged in post-Soviet period. At the beginning of the decade Russian producers seemed to have little competitive advantages. Nowadays their market share is 12%.
In the annual toy sales supervision report Russian Federal Consumer Rights Protection and Human Health Control Service informs: 15900 toys (14.5% of total supervised) were excluded from turnover, in the case of another 19700 (18%) toys - sales were suspended. Absolute majority (88.4%) of those toys were noname from China.

According to Federal State Statistics Service, in 2010 more than a half of toys were sold in Central Federal District, which is due to noname made-in-China domination in Russian regions.

Toy market in Russia is far from saturation point. The growth is expected to be driven by the following factors:
1. Increase in the number of newborns in 2007-2015
2. Low expenses for toys: while in Russia the average spending for toys amounts to $110 per year, the figure stands at some $280 in Western Europe.
3. Growth in demand on branded, licensed toys. The number of consumers in regions, which are interested in safe and high-quality toys, is gradually increasing.
