According to Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) there are 21.4 million kids up to 15 y.o. in 2011 in Russia, a number that is expected to rise to approx. 23.5 million by 2015.
Despite the decrease of female population aged from 15 to 49 y.o. through the forecast period: from 37 million in 2011 to 35 million in 2015; number of children is on positive trend due to birth rates steady growth since the 1990s, when birth rates declined dramatically as a result of a long and severe economic crisis.
Federal State Statistics Service foresees the stabilization of birth rate at the 1.55.
Infant mortality rates have also dropped. According to Federal State Statistics Service, in 1990 Russia had a child mortality rate of 17.4 deaths per 1 000 live births. This rate had fallen to 7.5 per 1,000 by 2010.
